SEMROC Model #KV-30

Description

The Astro-1 was initially releade by Centuri in 1969. It was one of the first model rocket kits to incorporate the quick-Change engine mount. The Astro-1 was updated by replacing the di-cut fins with precision laser-cut fins. The original rubber shock cord was replaced with an elastic cord and the original method of attaching it was replaced by Kevlar cord for greater reliability

Build History

  • 03/08/2004 – Purchased Semroc #KV-30 Astro-1 from Semroc for $9.50 (Retail $9.50)
  • 08/09/2006 – Took pictures of package and contents. Scanned centering ring, engine block, decal, plans, fin sheet, and photo card.
  • 08/10/2006 – Took measurements and recorded them on page 42 Book #3. Tied a knot in one end of Kevlar thread and inserted it under the motor clip at the forward end that fit into the slot. Glued engine block even with forward end of motor tube above engine hook. Glued on centering ring even with edge of engine hook in forward end of motor tube and other centering ring 1″ from rear of engine tube. Filleted forward centering ring joints and allowed to dry. Rounded leading edges of fins and taped trailing edges. Sanded root edge flat. Using #10 fin guide in plans, marked one end of body tube and drew lines for fins. Using marks and a door jamb, drew lines through marks the entire length of body tube. Glued screw eye into base of nose cone.
  • 08/11/2006 – Glued fins to body tube along reference lines and even with rear edge of body tube and filleted joints with yellow glue.
  • 08/12/2006 – Glued launch lug to body tube 1-3/4″ from read and midway between fins. Filleted fin joints.
  • 01/03/2024 – Sanded balsa parts with 120 & 220 grit sandpapers and sanded entire model with 600 & 1500 grit sandpapers. Wiped model with alcohol wiper.
  • 04/23/20924 – Spray painted body tube with Rust-oleum #328373 High Gloss White and nose done with Rust-oleum #327870 Gloss Black..
  • 04/27/2024 – Spray painted fins with Rust-oleum #327938 Satin Apple Red. Removed masking.
  • 04/28/2024 – Applied self-adhesive decals using plans as guide. This completes construction of Semroc #KV-30 Astro-1 model rocket.
