This awesome D and E engine rocket is a 1:5 scale model of ASAS’s sounding rockdt that was launched to the D layer of the ionosphere in 1968.

Build History

  • 12/27/2013 – Purchased Estes D-Region Tomahawk from Estes for $5.49 (Retail $43.49).
  • 05/19/2020 – Opened package. Scanned instructions and components. Measured components.
  • 05/20/2020 – Cemented fin body bulk head over aft end of motor mount tube. Cemented stuffer bulk head into stuffer tube. Cemented motor mount assembly into fin can. Cemented fin can halves together. Cemented lower body tube to fin can with center line midway between fin slots. Glued lower body tube over motor mount tube. Cemented launch lug to lower body tube 1/8″ from both ends. Cemented scale launch lug to fin can 2″ from aft end. Cemented find to fin tail. Cut flash from nose cone eyelette. Glued upper body tube to body tube adapter. Glued shock cord to shock cord mount. Glued a string to parachute and then a snap swivel. Model is now ready for paint and decals.
  • 04/15/2023 – Spray painted rocket with Rust-oleum #328373 High Gloss White.
  • 06/25/2023 – Applied 2nd coat of Rust-oleum #328373 High Gloss White spray paint.
  • 08/14/2023 – Sanded model with 120, 220, & 600 grit sandpaper. Wiped with alcohol wiper.
  • 08/20/2023 – Spray painted entire model with Rust-oleum #328374 High Gloss White.
  • 08/22/2023 – Masked body tube and spray painted fins with Rust-oleum #328374 High Gloss Black.
  • 10/25/2023 – Masked all but one fin. Spray painted one fin with Rust-oleum #7762830 Gloss Sunrise Red. Removed masking.
  • 10/31/2023 – Applied vinyl decals. This completes construction of Estes D-Region Tomahawk model rocket #2037.
